Goodman Gallery representing Pélagie Gbaguidi
South Africa-based Goodman Gallery is now representing Beninese artist Pélagie Gbaguidi. The gallery made the announcement on Instagram on 22 May, noting that they will share representation of the artist with Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel gallery in São Paulo, Brazil.
Born in Dakar in 1965, Gbaguidi refers to herself as a “griot”, a revered tradition in West Africa of travelling storytellers who maintain and reinterpret oral traditions. Her artworks encompass all mediums and forms, and can be understood as part of her search for new aesthetic forms through which to process the synchrony of past, present and future.
Gbaguidi’s work has been exhibited five times in the Biennale of Dakar (2004, 2006 , 2008, 2014, 2018), as well as in numerous international museums, including Stadtmuseum, Munich, MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, the National Museum of African Art, the Smithsonian in Washington and Musée Rouchechouart, France. She was also a participant in Documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel.
